Counselor

The Elementary School Counselor believes:

  • Children have dignity and worth as human beings.
  • Children learn best when they feel good about themselves and their relationships with others.
  • Children who understand their feelings are better able to control their behavior.
  • Children are capable of making responsible choices.
  • Attitudes formed during elementary school shape future attitudes toward learning, self and society.

What does a School Counselor do?

  • Talks with students individually
  • Talks with students in small groups-new kids, friendship, grief, divorce, study skills, organization, alcohol and drug abuse etc.
  • Encourages parent and community involvement in education
  • Facilitates developmental classroom guidance activities for all students
  • Helps identify the special needs of children
  • Helps students learn responsibility by becoming aware of the consequences of their behavior
  • Promotes positive attitudes among students and staff members
  • Works with parents and teachers to help their children achieve their fullest academic, social and emotional potential
  • Coordinates efforts with other school specialists
  • Coordinates referrals to outside agencies and community resources
  • Backpack food program
  • Coordinates for Big Brothers Big Sisters
  • Arc- Circle of Friends group
  • Heads the SBST.
